YOU Must Be the Change

Aloha,

This blog was created with the belief that real change in the world will only occur if individuals such as you get involved. While it is convenient to point at government agencies or the university administration to bring about change in environmental practices, the reality is that each one of us can bring about an IMMEDIATE change by how we live each day.

The articles that have been posted during the past weeks highlight some of the more immediate issues we face, such as global climate change and environmental degradation due to consumer apathy.

I would like to thank those who took the time to comment on the articles that have been posted in the blog. While living in paradise we often forget or fail to realize how our individual actions impact the environment or the lives of others, both today and in the future.

To quote Ghandi, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world". Please do us all a favor by inspiring us with your comments on how YOU plan to be a change in the world.

Cheers, Dr. Tom DeWitt

Most people just walk by a piece of rubbish on the ground. I make it my responsibility to pick up any piece of litter i see on the ground. I know that if i can pick up just onbe piece everyday i am making the world a cleaner place. It may be a small task but if others see me taking that responsibility maybe they might take the initiative and help make our land greener and cleaner.

I am going to be the change by being a leader. People may support "a change" but in order for there to be a change someone needs to establish it. I want to lead the world to a better tomorrow. Whether it be in the environment or maintaining sustainability I want to do everything I can to help lead people there. I want to get educated so I can then educate those about the changes that are afecting our society because the best way to lead someone is by educating them.

I will be the change by recycling or "hi fiving" my bottles and cans. At my house we have a recylce bin and my brothers and mom and i put all our cans and bottles in there. About every two weeks we take our container of cans and bottles to Atlas and we redeem the cans for money. I am proud to say that i am the one that made my family start "hi fiving." At first i was into reclycling because i knew i could get money but as we continued to recycle i realized that we are helping the world be more efficient. Because of the fact that i know my family is trying to make the world a better place, for this reason i am happy.

I truly appreciate being asked this question. There are several ways I plan to be a part of the change. First and foremost, I will educate others and challenge them to think about how they can be a change in this world. Secondly, I will personally make an effort to recycle or use less energy. Third, I will support organizations that are making this effort, like buying my produce at the farmers market. Finally, my next adventure, is to start small at my own home by growing my own vegetable and using true "green" items.

I will be the change by spreading the word to others in my community, telling them the importance of being "green". Most people take things for granted, like oil and believe that they don't have to worry about it now, but what they don't understand is that there kids will have to deal with this issue when they grow up. I can also recycle around the neighborhood and in school. I can use less energy when i can to conserve the resources that we have now. I can be the change by just being a role model to people around me to be kind to your environment because it will take care of you. -Will Farr Period 2 Marketing

I’m taking baby steps in order to be a part of the Change. I believe that something as simple as recycling can make a difference in the environment. Our world is not going to be around forever. If we want our children to have a future we have to allow them to have one. A few years ago my family didn’t care much about the environment. My family decided that in order to change the world we must first start by changing ourselves. With that we decided to go “Semi” green. We now have our own garden where we grow our own fruits and vegetables and started recycling. It’s not much but for us it is a good start. We are trying to get more of our friends and family aware and involved. It feels good to change. -Io Heaukulani

I want to make a change by becoming a teacher when I grow up. I plan on taking the necessary courses through high school and college to meet the needs of becoming one. When I finally am a teacher, I will educate children on how they can make a difference in this world and encourage them to do so.

I believe one person can make a difference in the world. Our generation has a lot of opinionated individuals that will stand up for their future and create a change. Being apart of this generation I plan to help change the world by recycling all the bottles and cans that my family drinks. We collect empty plastic bottles, cans, glass bottles etc. and take them to the recycling center. Hopefully this will help our world to be a cleaner, more eco-friendly place. I also plan to help my school to become more "green". I am apart of this group that is trying to use solar energy, aquaculture, or something of that sort to run our schools power system instead of electricity. Hopefully this break through will inspire other schools and large businesses to use other alternatives for their lighting, air conditioning, etc.

I will be the change by first setting a good example to the newer generations after me. I will do things to help not only the economy around me but hopefully the whole world. I will help with beach clean-ups so that our marine life can live in healthy environments(?). I will also limit my use of aerosol spray cans with CFC's to help with the issue of global warming. I want my children and my grandchildren to be able to live full and healthy lives without having to worry about not having a reef or about global warming. Knowing that I can be the big change that will help the world in such a small way makes me feel important. =)

In order to make a change on the world, it's my duty to step up and be a leader for others. Everyone talks about change but not everyone goes through with it. I'll enforce the importance of caring for our aina. Hawaii is dependent on people outside of our state when we have the materials to be sustainable on our own. I'll lead Hawaii to a better future.

It's quite hard to make change these days. People are so hard set into their own daily routines they rarely ever stray from them. To make change, people need to know that such a thing is possible. They must know that change is needed. That is what i hope i can do; help people realize that change is possible, needed and beneficial.

we reallly should try our best to help and do our part,i will most definately do part in helping and making a positive change!

I believe that taking the initiative is something that we all should do, but is rarely seen. To those few who do take the initiative to change the world through their own efforts, congratulations! Be proud of your efforts.

I feel that The world is only made better by people who make use of it. We rely on things that are made and given to us by others rather that educating our selves on how they are made. We all need to have more self reliance. I was once told that "we all thrive on dumb people in the world." This means that we are each 'dumbed' down in certain areas so that another factory or business cam profit for it. For example: If we knew how to farm our own foods, we wouldn't have to rely on what grocery stores provide food for us. I'm not saying that everyone is dumb. I'm just saying that we all are educated in certain areas is all. :D

I agree with this article because I believe that the best and most affective way to make a difference is to just do it yourself. The people must take the first step to changing the world, which includes all of us as well.

Time for a change, as Obama stated repeatedly in his presidential campaign the time for change is indeed upon us. As an individualto make a change I plan on going green, recycle, go solar, ect.

i can "be the change" by recycling every possible thing that i can. not only recycling cans and bottles for money, but also things like cardboard so that there is less rubbish in the garbage dump and more things that can be reused. i think that doing this can make the world a much cleaner and better place.

Although being green and recycling is important, I think that a change begins in the heart. I am training and working hard to be a teacher so I can influence younger generations. They need good values and morals to reach--they need a good example. That's what I want to be. One day I'll be a teacher to help make that change in students--to help make them want to gain an education, to help others, to support a clean environment, and to be good and industrious leaders. I don't need to wait to become a teacher in order to be a good example, I am going to be the change now by being a leader and good example for all those I meet.

Rome wasn't built in a day. Change takes a long period of time, but with little steps every initiative can/will make a difference in out everyday lives. personally i've started recycling at home, and with my contribution to help save the earth i feel that i can do more for the environment. over time its become a project for me and my 4 yr. sister to collect, distribute, and turn in the can to our local recycling center. i think if more people in my community did a little contribution, we wouldnt be suffering from global warming, running out of resources, and it would make us all feel better about ourselves knowing we are making a difference in the world. soooo GO GREEN =)

lots of love, lana

People usually just think that to be a difference in making the world greener you have to be part of a program or you have to be some kind of environmentalist person. I say that it is by individual commitment and effort. I think that I can do my part in picking up rubbish and even recycling so we stop killing our resources. I can be a leader and show others to be committed to making the world greener.

Every individual is a very important part in making our environment a better place. To make a positive change I would help to promote going "green". For example i would help recycle bottles, cans, etc. Also I would help by finding ways to preserve electricity or finding other ways of getting it. Therefore making our environment less dependent on things like this. Also I would want to do work on our lands, making them greener and keeping them cleaner.

I'll be the change by telling everyone how the little things they can change matter. Like picking up rubbish when you see it, recycling what you can, and just trying to promote better things for everyone.

I am trying to help bring change by being a part of a group at the school called the "green warriors". In this group we are trying to come up with services and products that will help our community and our school to be more "green". We are researching and thinking about alternative energy sources and how we can incorporate these into our lives more. Hopefully we can help make this positive change.

I believe that being the change means taking reponsibility for our actions and accepting that although we have many flaws, we can work hard everyday to be a better person. We must realize that it's never too late to "make yourself" into the person that you want to be, a person that exuberates the beauty of your inner being.

I am going to be the change by not only recycling and doing other things that will help the enviroment, but I will inspire my friends and family to do the same as well. I will do my best to be a leader, and convince the people around me, whether I know them or not, to be the change and step up as a leader too.

I definitely need to change, but realize that it will not take a day. To start, I plan to go completely green. I recently helped my parents to change the lighbulbs in our house to eco-friendly and energy efficient. A baby step, but a step in the right direction. However, I plan to buy only locally grown and made products, to help with the economy...although Wal-mart products are cheaper, they don't give back to a local family, and they don't benefit the community. To change, I will help the people first, and then the planet

I think that ghandi had it right. In order to make a change in the world one must change one's self. I will change my daily habits by always recycling when I can, reminding others, and just being an all around green person.

I want to use the power of words, but words are really actions. And to be the change I'm pretty sure I have to do more. But my writing is my best event so I would like to write about changes in the world. If I was to take actions I would probable pick up trash I see, try and be a little more energy efficient at home, and try to save more money.

I like how this blogspot is encouraging us to make a change in our own lives to better the world in its entirety. I feel that we must all take the initiative to try something small, see what happens, and work upwards to something bigger. I can make a change right now by doing things such as recycling, using less water at home, saving electricity, and picking up trash or whatever so as to leave the smallest carbon footprint for my lifetime. Little things nlike that do matter and can make a change. Be the Change.

A change that I can do is probably conserve energy and gas. Even the most smallest thing to conserve energy such as unplugging appliances (chargers) could save a lot on electricity. By not wasting gas on careless driving trips, it will lessen my carbon footprints. I believe by starting off small and slowly progressing, it will have a huge impact on others.

to make a change it will take everyone, to strive to a accomplish a common goal. It will take hard work and dedication to create change. We will need to put into action little things we could do to begin to change our enviorment. First the change needs to start individually. We will all need to let people know what is actually happenening to our enviorment so that people are aware of whats going on.
Personally what I could do is to recycle as much as possible. I could also pick up trash, and be a clean person. By doing these little things, I can be an example for others to follow and do the same.
